It’s not always easy running an independent bookshop when big business (the usual suspects) discounts and devalues books so visibly. Despite this we are incredibly lucky and grateful that you our wonderful customers, see the value of us and continue to buy books from our little shop.
However there are some people we never see in our bookshop: families who are struggling to make ends meet due to difficult circumstances, the cost of living crisis, life dealing them a tough run so far… We want to be able to give anyone who needs it the chance to experience the joy of books.
Books are incredible. They let us travel without moving, step into someone else’s shoes, realise things about ourselves and escape from our own reality when we need that too, often for less than what it costs to spend half an hour in a coffee chain.
Our Pay It Forward project starts with a very special children’s book ‘The Final Year’ written by Matt Goodfellow and illustrated by much-loved Carnegie-shortlisted illustrator Joe Todd-Stanton. Matt is a poet, author and former primary school teacher based in the North West of England. He’s local to our area and The Final Year is set in a community just like ours.
Life is tough for Nate, moving into the last year of primary school and looking after his two younger brothers when his mum isn’t up to it. It’s a year of challenges, change, family struggles and difficult emotions with love and warmth woven throughout. This wonderful book is a powerful and lyrical story about finding your place in the world and the people that matter within it.
The book is suitable for children aged 8+ and 1 copy costs £8.99.
OUR AIM IS TO SEND A COPY INTO AS MANY KS2 CLASSROOMS IN CHORLEY AND SURROUNDING AREAS AS WE CAN. ANYTHING YOU DONATE TOWARDS OUR PAY IT FORWARD PROJECT, WE WILL PUT TOWARDS THE OVERALL FUND. KEEP AN EYE ON OUR FACEBOOK/TWITTER/INSTAGRAM PAGES FOR UPDATES.
